Khachkar is a medieval Armenian work of art, a memorial monument with images of crosses. Vertical stone, decorated with ornaments, the façade of which is straight west. It contains the basic Christian concept of the atonement of Jesus Christ. The main element is the cross as the heavenly spiritual paradise promised by Christ and the sacrament of salvation. Above all, for Armenians, Khachkar served as an icon.
Almost all Armenian religious buildings are decorated with an Armenian khachkar (cross-stone). On the walls of many churches, you can see carved images of the cross, which have their own special meaning. Small crosses were depicted in honor of patrons and benefactors, whose efforts the church was built.
The cross was so respected and worshiped by the Armenians that this symbol inspired stone craftsmen to create these unique works of art. And they got the name, consonant with their content – cross-stone (khachkar).
There are khachkars in almost every corner of the Armenian world. They never repeat themselves. The main purpose of the khachkar is to establish a connection with God.
