The title King of kings in the history of Armenia refers to Tigran II, also known as Tigran the Great. He was one of the most successful kings in world history, but meanwhile remains unknown to the west. He conquered all of Mesopotamia, conquered Parthia, and challenged the greatest power of his time – the Roman Empire.

The title “King of kings”, judging by the coins of that time, belonged only to Tigran the Great. Even Parthia could not claim this title. Plutarch said: “The king of kings Tigran never appeared in public without at least four kings waiting for his audience.”

Cicero, referring to his success in the east, said that Tigran II “made the Roman Republic tremble with his valor.”

Under King Tigran II the Great, Armenia flourished and became the most powerful state east of the Roman Republic. Tigran II expanded Armenia to its largest historical borders.
